HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY
The Health and Safety policy is based on the following principles:
The Trustees are responsible for the management of Health and Safety issues within Sherburn in Elmet Community Trust.
The Trustees delegate certain responsibilities, as detailed below.
The Health and Safety policy will be reviewed annually by the Trustees.
Statement of general Health and Safety policy
Sherburn in Elmet Community Trust Health and Safety policy is to:
Provide control of risks in order to prevent accidents and work related ill health.
Provide adequate information and training to staff and volunteers.
Engage and consult with employees and volunteers on Health and Safety issues and conditions, and provide advice and supervision about occupational health.
Ensure emergency procedures are in place in case of significant incident.
Provide safe and healthy working conditions and safe use and storage of harmful substances.
Volunteers and employee’s responsibilities
Employees and volunteers are required to read the Health and Safety poster displayed which summarises the rights and responsibilities they have under health and safety law.
Breaches of the Health and Safety rules may be dealt with through the disciplinary procedure.
Whenever an employee or volunteer notices a Health and Safety problem, which they are unable to correct, they must inform their line manager.
Employees and volunteers are required to undertake training provided to ensure their own and others Health and Safety.
Responsibility for putting this policy into practice at the library is delegated to Kevin Sibson.
Responsibility for putting this policy into practice at the Old Girl’s School is delegated to Tony Hewitt.

|Control of risks||Risk assessments to be undertaken and actions implemented. Assessments should be reviewed every year or earlier if working habits or conditions change.|
|Procedures for regular health and safety checks and inspections to be established and implemented.|
|Staff Training||Employees and volunteers will be given Health and Safety induction, provided with training relevant to their duties and evacuation procedures.|
|Training should include safe manual handling, kitchen and food hygiene, safe storage and use of hazardous substances, safe disposal of waste, safe and healthy use of IT equipment.|
|Training and advice to be given to employees and volunteers in dealing with difficult customers, handling difficult situations and workplace violence|
|Staff Consultation||Employees and volunteers routinely consulted on health and safety matters as they arise.
Provided with information about how to complain about perceived health and safety weaknesses or hazards.
|Emergency Procedures||Fire risk assessment to be undertaken and action plan implemented.|
|Evacuation plans are tested from time to time and updated as necessary. Alarm systems and fire extinguishers to be regularly tested and maintained|
|To maintain safe and healthy working conditions||Ensure that all equipment and appliances are tested,maintained and kept in a safe condition.
Toilets, washing facilities and drinking water to be provided.
|First Aid equipment to be available.|
|The work of outside contractors to be subject to specific plans and procedures to ensure they are conducted safely.|
|Specific health and safety requirements should be considered for hirers or users of rooms and services|
